Lt. George Arthur Knowland VC

Before deploying as a commando in World War II, George Knowland walked the very corridors our children walk today as a former pupil of Elmwood. On 31st January 1945, while commanding a forward platoon at the Battle of Hill 170 in Kangaw, Burma, he stood on top of his trench under heavy fire to single-handedly stem an assault of 300 enemy troops, saving his comrades and successfully defending the beachhead.

For his magnificent heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross—the highest accolade for bravery in the British Armed Forces. His name stands permanently recorded at the school on a commemorative brass plaque.

📅 Annual Memorial Service & Award

Every year, on or near the 31st January, Elmwood Juniors holds a prestigious remembrance assembly to honor his legacy. We are proud to welcome George Knowland’s family, the Mayor of Croydon, military veterans, and representatives from the Commando Association. During this special service, the highly coveted George Knowland Certificate of Merit is awarded to two pupils who have explicitly demonstrated outstanding selflessness, resilience, and community spirit.
